It’s Party Time

Over the past few months I’ve received countless requests from family, friends and readers for advice on what they should wear to an upcoming event. I usually send these lovely ladies my top picks for special occasions based on what I think will flatter their bodies. My goal as a stylist is not to have them run out and buy something just because I say so. My hope is that they will try on different styles and find out what looks best on them, and what makes them feel like a million bucks.
With that in mind, I would like to thank my gorgeous blogger friend McKenna Bleu for taking photos of me in my favorite fall-party ensembles. Each of these outfits makes me feel special and confident (such a great combo), and we had so much fun during our shoot at Endicott Park in Danvers. Thank you McKenna, and thank you Northshore Mall – one of my favorite special-occasion-shopping destinations – for providing all of my gorgeous attire!

Flattering Work Wear

One of my favorite reasons to get “dressed up” every day is for my job. I love putting together trendy and sophisticated work outfits that flatter my body. This season, I have a few favorite trends that are showing up in my wardrobe:

510 Chalkboard Background for 530 polyvore sets with chalkboard

Houndstooth is a classic pattern. It shows up year after year in collections because it is gorgeous, and easy-to-wear. I love both of these houndstooth dresses because of their figure-flattering shapes. The NY Collection dress I found at Macy’s at Northshore Mall is a simple sheath, but the black “belt” in the middle draws in your waist at the perfect part of your body.  Similarly, the Jessica Simpson dress from Nordstrom at Northshore Mall is also a waist accentuating stunner! I love that it will also mask what I deem the most inconvenient part of my body (my tummy).

510 Jacket and pants with chalkboard

Although I tend to lean towards black and white (have you noticed yet?), pops of color are huge this season. I love this bright teal jacket from Banana Republic at Northshore Mall. Not only is this a beautiful color on most people, this jacket is tailored with a feminine silhouette to contour and slim your waist! Who doesn’t love that? I’m also adore these high-waisted pants from White House | Black Market at Northshore Mall. These pants are a great fit because the button-accented tabs on the waistband draw your eye away from the tummy “problem” area, plus there are only pockets in the back to keep the front smooth and flat!

510 Jacket, shoes and peplum shirt with chalkboard

Finally, when I saw this coat from White House | Black Market at Northshore Mall, I knew I just had to have it. With all the feminine detail, it really stands out and is a gorgeous addition to my work wardrobe. I’m also loving this peplum shirt from Phillip Lim 3.1 at Nordstrom at Northshore Mall, as well as these patent-leather pumps. Put these two together with some bright red or houndstooth-patterned pants, and you have got yourself one head-turning, well-put-together work outfit!

I hope you enjoyed reading about my love for flattering work wear! Here are some upcoming events I’m excited about:

510 Simon fashion now

Check out the latest fall fashion trends on the runway at Simon Fashion Now on October 4th & 5th at Burlington Mall.

Attend Wishing on a Starry Night, an amazing local fashion benefit on November 1st at the DoubleTree in Danvers to raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It is going to be a wonderful evening of fashion, dinner and dancing, as well as silent and live auctions, all to benefit an incredible cause. Learn more about Wishing on a Starry Night.

Wishing all of you a stylish & flattering work-week,

A Flattering Fall Weekend

Welcome Fall! I just had THE best fall weekend! I was invited to The Vintage Bazaar at Pettingill Farm in Salisbury, MA and was delighted by all the vintage finds, crafts, vendors, music and food. It was perfectly crisp weather, and I was excited to wear my new fall digs! Since I wanted to be comfortable while traipsing through the lovely fields, I chose a simple, flattering, natural waist a-line dress from Forever XXI at Northshore Mall. Red is one of my favorite colors (it makes even the gloomiest day bright), so I was excited to find this cozy dress in my favorite apple-hue (and many other colors)!

Flattering Fall Weekend 510

For me, one of the best parts about living in New England in the fall is the plethora of outdoor fairs, but this one absolutely blew me away. I was SO THRILLED to just be there to experience all the gorgeous vintage finds, as well as re-purposed furniture and household decor (like the Be-YOU-tiful mirror below). I was also happier-than-a-kitten-with-catnip to wear my new boots from Apricot Lane at the Northshore Mall. These boots are comfortable enough to wear all day – a rare find, especially when I first wear boots!

Fab polyvore 510

Another reason I attended The Vintage Bazaar was to be a part of the Bloggers & Bellini’s event hosted by Devon Allen, Director and Founder of The Vintage Bazaar. I had the pleasure of meeting and catching up with other amazing local bloggers like Taylor of New England Vintage Chic and McKenna of McKenna Bleu. Along with the other bloggers, I received a personal tour of the entire bazaar. What a wonderful day it was! I will most definitely be making this an annual trip for me and Mr. Flattery (who got to nosh on some flavorful treats and bellinis during the event, so don’t feel too bad for him).

Welcome Bloggers 510

Currently, the Northshore Mall has some of the best outfits for whatever you fancy this fall – The Topsfield Fair, apple-picking at Brooksby Farm, or tractor riding at Smolack! Whatever you choose to wear, make sure it flatters your best features! Wishing you dreams of French-inspired flea markets, pumpkins, and maybe some warm apple-cider-doughnuts…come on, who doesn’t love those?

Behind the Fashion: a Q&A with StyleFlattery

I read a lot of blogs and fashion articles. I follow different people on Twitter, oggle at their Pinterest boards and sometimes stalk them on Facebook. It just occurred to me, though, that it is hard to really KNOW someone through blog content, quotes and images. I thought I would take a minute to share this interview with my readers so you can get to know a little bit more about me…by using content, quotes and images (oh well, it will just have to do):

FEET: Swarovski crystal flip flops my friend Toni-ann made me. They are so shimmery and I get compliments on them every time I wear them.
MIND: How in the world did I get this tired? Oh ya, I’ve been up since 4:15am…that’s how!
VANITY: My favorite Emporio Armani “SHE” perfume (discontinued, boo), and various other perfumes, shabby chic lamp, brushes, and Home Sweet Home candle from Yankee Candle (mmm, smells like fall).
BUCKET LIST:  Visit Italy, become famous (not infamous), drive a race car.
NIGHTSTAND: “Inferno” by Dan Brown, Marie Claire “September” Issue, various remotes.
WORKOUT PLAN: Workout plan? What’s that? Yikes!
PLAYLIST: My country playlist includes “One Way Ticket,” Carrie Underwood, “Storm Warning,” Hunter Hayes, “Crash My Party,” Luke Bryan, “Settlin’,” Sugarland, any and all Zac Brown Band, various other playlists but my favorites includes 80’s (think “Eye of the Tiger and Footloose).
WALLS OF YOUR FAVORITE ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE: My favorite room is my kitchen where my damask stencilled wall is located. So proud that I did it myself!
TWITTER FEED: Updates from my StyleFlattery blog, where I’m traveling (and pics), random inspirational quotes by others.
WISH LIST: I know, I am a broken record, BUT a trip to Italy to visit all of the amazing churches and historic sites I studied in college during art history class.
SHIT LIST: Sugar, flour and alcohol.
GO-TO MENU: When I eat out, Victoria Station or Howling Wolf in Salem. When I eat in: rice cakes with almond butter, banana and raisins…mmmm, yummmm!
PINTEREST BOARD: Everything glamour, fall-fashion trends, travel and home decor. I love quotes, and wedding gowns too!
DESKTOP SCREENSAVER: Terrible – it’s still the blue screen. What, am I too busy to change my screen saver? Note to self, add “update screensaver” to bucket list above.

TOP-FIVE MOST-USED IPHONE APPS LIST: 1. Starbucks 2.Twitter 3. WordPress 4. Pandora 5.Yahoo email
REFRIGERATOR DOOR: Nothing! It’s stainless steel and the last time I tried a magnet on it, it didn’t magnetize. Hold on, let me try it again…nope, still not magnetic.
TOP-FIVE FEARS LIST: 1. Gaining back all the weight I worked so diligently to lose (vain, but true). 2. Losing my family and/or friends. 3. Someone making me eat a pickle 4. Being jumped in a dark alley (I know, after being forced to eat a pickle, this doesn’t seem so bad). 5. Sea-nimals (animals that live in the sea – I’m not a fan).
IDEAL CELEBRITY DINNER PARTY GUEST LIST: Will Ferrell, Channing Tatum, Carrie Underwood, Ann Curry, Fat Amy.
BIGGEST REGRETS LIST: No regrets. A few years ago, I would have listed a few, but today, one day at a time, I am doing all the things I never thought I could do! YAY!
QUOTES TO LIVE BY LIST: “Walk like you have three men walking behind you.” – Oscar de la Renta. “I do enough, I have enough, I am enough” – I have no idea who said that, or if I even quoted that correctly.
HEADSTONE, IF YOU COULD WRITE IT: “Live for today! Tara did, just not today.”

Flattering Fall Fashion – What To Wear Now

Reposted from StyleFlattery @ Northshore Mall

This fall has an eclectic mix of shimmering metallics, imaginative furs, and floral brocades, not to mention pops of color, winter whites, mixed prints, fashion-fringe and leather-everything. This got me thinking: where in the world do I begin? There are so many gorgeous items for fall at the Northshore Mall, but it all seems a little overwhelming. This is where my “style is personal” mantra comes in! I absolutely refuse to wear something I don’t like or that does not flatter my shape, even if it’s trendy. Here are some trends that I love for fall, from day to play!

I am a big fan of a “classic” look for day – office, errands, even shopping. For fall, I am loving this front-keyhole “little black dress” with just a hint of ruffle flair in the skirt from Ann Taylor, the sheer and lace “body” top from Bebe, and cheetah-print pumps from Banana Republic. All gorgeous and refreshing!

Classics Polyvore set 510

I have seen a lot of leather for fall this year – skirts, dresses and pants. While I am not a fan of an all-over leather look, I do love hints of leather, as in the piping on this elegant shift dress from Banana Republic. I also love the edginess of fringe as the weather gets cooler. These booties from Nordstrom, and earrings from Forever XXI are the perfect accessories for day or night!

Fringe and leather Accents Polyvore set 510

Planning a night out with the girls, boyfriend or hubby? Evening is the best time to wear metallic – it shimmers and shines! I am loving this whole look from Bebe – so fun!

What looks are you most attracted to this season? I would love to hear what trends you will choose as the New England weather cools down. Comment here or find me on Twitter. Looking forward to getting inspired by my readers!

5 Flattering Ways to Wear Leggings

Reposted from StyleFlattery @ Northshore Mall

It’s my favorite time of year…well, almost. I love the fall, and I’m very excited to take out my leggings and mix and match them with the perfect tops. First off, I need to start with an amazing pair of leggings. I just purchased the Instantly Slimming Leggings from White House | Black Market {$60}.

WHBM Leggings 510

The shapewear band at the tummy and inner panel down the leg’s outer seam make these leggings extremely flattering (they are worth the investment because I will wear them again and again). Now that I have my leggings, I’m ready to start pairing. I love the coziness and comfort of the fall: easy-to-wear tops and flats, but I also love dressing up with a leather jacket and a great pair of heels. Here are some ways I will be wearing my favorite new leggings this fall:

5 Flattering Ways to Wear Leggings

1. Tunic top {White House | Black Market} and knee boots:

2. Bright sweater {Banana Republic} and flats:

4. Leather Jacket and heels {Nordstrom}:

5. Button down with French-cuffs with heels or flats {Macy’s}:

Flatter Your Body – How to Find Your Perfect Dress

Reposted from StyleFlattery @ Northshore Mall

Hello dress-lovers,

I can’t think of a better topic to write about than picking the perfect dress for your body type. I wear a dress almost every day at this time of year, and I know I can’t be the only woman who does this! Here is a guide for choosing the most flattering style for you:

A flowy silhouette is especially gorgeous on a statuesque woman. Also, peplums work very well on leggy-ladies!

Cache Tall 510

{Cache at Northshore Mall}

Ann Taylor Tall 510

{Ann Taylor at Northshore Mall}

A styling secret for the pear shape is to wear a dress with a padded bra. This helps balance out bigger hips and thighs. Also, picking a dress with embellishments on the bodice, such as ruffles and florals, will help keep attention on a small torso.

Apricot Lane Pear 510

Guess Pear 510

For the woman who does not have a lot of curves, rouching that gathers at the hip creates a more voluptuous look. Also, a halter top, natural-waist-dress with a pattern will create the illusion of curves.

Support is key when it comes to the well-endowed ladies. Think thick straps and plenty of coverage (with less risk of spilling over).

Hello everyone!

The heat wave has finally lifted, and it has me thinking a little bit about Fall…just a little. One of the trends that is carrying over into Fall 2013 is DENIM. This fabric never goes out of style, but HOW it is worn comes and goes with each passing season. This Summer and Fall, the sky is the limit with denim. Here are a few ways to wear one of 2013’s hottest trends:

Denim shoes are adorable and can be worn with just about any look. Try pairing these Carina denim flats from Banana Republic with a flirty black skirt or white cropped pants.

Banana Republic Carina Pointed Toe Flat 510

VEST 510

A denim vest can be worn in so many ways. For Summer, slip it on over a maxi dress or sleeveless shirt with shorts and wedges. For Fall, add it over your favorite black chiffon long-sleeve top and sparkly skirt, and pair with pumps.

Express Studded Light Wash Denim Vest 510

I know, it seems too early to talk about layering, but I’m going to mention it anyway because I love to layer – the opportunities are endless when it comes to changing up the look! Layer a denim shirt with a light, belted dress and heels (leave the denim shirt unbuttoned for an easy-to-wear look). Layer a cropped denim jacket with a lighter color denim short, bright top and fabulous statement-necklace. Or, (AGAHST!) layer a light striped sweater over a light-wash denim shirt, leave untucked over a dark wash denim jean, and add a brightly colored flat (the perfect cozy Fall outfit for me).

I am loving denim this year, and the best part about it – EVERYONE CAN WEAR THIS TREND! Find your perfect blend of denim at Northshore Mall in Peabody!

Add Some Flapper Flair

Reposted from StyleFlattery @ Northshore Mall

This summer is all about The Great Gatsby – the movie, the themed parties, the weddings, and of course roaring 20’s-style clothing. I am a huge fan of the time period where feather fascinators, gorgeous fringe and art deco accessories were the norm!

I recently attended a Gatsby-inspired fundraiser in Danvers and wore THE MOST AMAZING floor-length-gown. I loved watching everyone strut around in their prohibition-era-attire. It got me thinking “how can I bring this look into my normal day without looking overdone?” The answer came in the form of a pleated polka dot skirt from Forever XXI, black halter top from White House | Black Market, ivory lace headband from Icing, a string of pearls, and the perfect cocktail ring from Macy’s, not to mention my ever-present MAC Red lipstick from Nordstrom! Not a surprise, this is all from Northshore Mall!

What is the secret to pulling together a fabulous Gatsby look for your day-time-plans?

1. Put simple accessories together – choose accessories that make you look polished with little effort.

2. Cat eyeliner and red lips are a must.

3. Oxford flats are the perfect addition to channel your day-time flapper.

4. A vintage crystal broach can dress up any handbag – a little sparkle = a lot of glam.

Have a blast with vintage-styling this summer!

How To Become A Style Chameleon

Have you ever been tired of your look? Maybe it’s the end of the season and you’ve been wearing the same outfits, or it could be you just haven’t had time for shopping . Whatever the case, every woman falls into a fashion-rut every now and then. What is the key, then, to never tiring of your attire? Become a style chameleon!

I tend to go for the “same” styles each season because they flatter my body, such as, a natural-waist dresses with a great pair of stilettos.

However, the other day I stepped out of the box and into some different, equally flattering trends at Forever XXI at Northshore Mall, and I was pleasantly surprised by the result. Here is what I found my best “style chameleon” equation to be for Summer 2013:

Extremely cute summer vests (-) Being afraid to mix patterns (+) A bit of biker chic (=) A fun, flattering and different look for me!

This next sentence is for me as much as it is for you, readers: don’t be afraid to change it up every once-in-a-while! The best outfits happen when I try something totally out of my comfort zone, and mix and match different styles (come on, biker-chic and stilettos, Tara? Yes, absolutely!) The most important thing is to laugh at yourself (and maybe take a picture and send it to me) if an outfit becomes a complete fashion disaster! Pull different things together and try them on in the dressing room – work it, ladies!

For help navigating any new trends, leave me a comment here! I will respond with some helpful tips.
