SAG Awards 2013 – My Best Dressed List

If you missed the SAG Awards last night, you missed some amazing gowns! Lucky for you, I will do a short recap of my favorites from the evening.

The trend of the night seemed to be navy/midnight blue as seen on Jennifer Lawrence. This poor young woman was such a trooper! Not only did she have pneumonia, but she also had to deal with a “wardrobe malfunction” while accepting her actor! She looked AMAZING in Christian Dior:

Marion Cotillard also gets a “best dressed” nomination from me – I am in love with this gorgeous Christian Dior:

20130128-131141.jpg

Nicole Kidman and Amanda Seyfried also wore midnight blue; both looked stunning in Vivienne Westwood and Zac Posen, respectively:

20130128-132020.jpg

Helen Hunt was a pleasant surprise for me. She looked like a breath of fresh air in Romona Keveza:

20130128-132137.jpg

Finally Kaley Cuoco, one of my favorite funny girls from (the best comedy in my humble opinion), The Big Bang Theory, really blew me away in Romona Keveza – her body just looked perfect!

Awards season is so much fun – I just can’t get enough of these stunning women! Clearly fashion just keeps getting better and better this year.

The stylists who dress these women make it look easy, but the lesson is that each on of these women is wearing an extremely flattering style for their unique shape. I love that we can all learn from these leading ladies: dress to flatter your body and you will be a “best dressed nominee!”

Flatter yourself today!

Styling for Seacoast Weddings Magazine 2013

Good morning everyone,

I am thrilled to finally share my experience and images from the photoshoot I styled for Seacoast Weddings Magazine 2013. On a blustery September morning, I had the pleasure of sailing into the Gloucester Harbor  with full crew on the Thomas E. Lannon Schooner for an editorial photo shoot for Seacoast Weddings Magazine 2013, along with the photographer, Mark Davidson, makeup artist, Emily Higgiins, hair stylist, Christine Conroy, and gorgeous model, Caroline Reddy.

The call time for the morning was 6:30am. Hair and makeup started immediately aboard the docked schooner.

As the sun rose above the harbor, we set sail. The gorgeous light started to gleam across the water; what a sight. I was so grateful to be a part of this shoot already!

It was about 35 degrees out in the middle of Gloucester Harbor when the photographer, Mark Davidson, signaled it was time to start shooting. Caroline Reddy, the beautiful model for the day, was ready to go. Her hair and makeup looked amazing, and her gown and accessories were perfection (if I do say so myself). She was such a trooper. Even though it was cold, she made it seem like it was the middle of summer. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at the masters at work:

I styled four different looks for the photoshoot, using bridal gowns and accessories from Bella Sera Bridal (of course!). Two of the looks were chosen by the magazine editor for full-page-spreads in Seacoast Weddings Magazine!

The entire photoshoot, including hair, makeup, styling, and preparation took about eight hours to complete. I was the “good” kind of tired after all was said and done, and could not wait to tell everyone about this great experience. I had met some wonderful professionals, got to take a sail on a beautiful schooner (the Thomas E. Lannon does private sails and weddings, by-the-way), and got to do something that I absolutely adore – make someone look stunning (although if you ever meet Caroline Reddy you will know she doesn’t need anyone to make her look gorgeous, she is naturally beautiful). I am consistently amazed by the opportunities that come my way, and the amount of fun I am having just by pursuing the things I really enjoy.

I am excited to share my next blog post with you soon, featuring the Bella Sera Bridal & Lorraine Roy Grand Re-Opening – a night of celebration, fashion and fun!

Spring fashion thoughts on a snowy day

Hi Everyone,

January weather has finally arrived in Boston! This gloomy, snowy day is enough to drive me crazy – or at least drive me to Pinterest to scour for spring trends and dreams of warmer weather. As far as spring 2013 colors go, I think we can all agree that YELLOW and EMERALD are in. Nothing makes me happier than bright colors, but I have to be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of either yellow or emerald on me, but I love them on other people! If you are in my boat, and want to wear these spring trends, but don’t have the skin-tone to bombard your wardrobe with these hue-filled items, here are some tips for adding them into your spring lineup:

Mix yellow or emerald with other neutrals like, black, white or tan

As you can see, there are many ways to bring the bright colors of Spring 2013 into your every-day-style without having to a) buy an entire new wardrobe or b) wear an outfit in a color you are not fond of just because it is “in.” For now, stay dry, stay warm, and stay fashionable.

I will leave you with a quote from Audrey Hepburn that makes me smile:

I believe in manicures
I believe in overdressing
I believe in primping
at leisure and
wearing lipstick.

Don’t forget to flatter yourself today!

All that Glitters – Golden Globes 2013

Good morning,

The red carpet sparkled last night at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards. Lea Michele, Connie Britton and Sofia Vergara were just some of the glittering best-dressed ladies of the evening:

What were the trends of the night? Red, gold embroidered lace, high slits and illusion necklines. Here are my winners in these categories:

Best Red Gown – Jennifer Garner in Vivienne Westwood Couture:

Best Gold Embroidery – Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vautnier Haute Couture:

Best Illusion Neckline- Isla Fisher in Reem Acra:

And, of course I have a favorite. When this gown hit the red carpet, I was speechless.

Best Overall Gown – Julianne Hough in Monique Lhuillier:

Not only is Julianne Hough GORGEOUS, but she is also a little peculiar. A closer look at Hough reveals her beetle earrings. She collaborated with jewelry designer Daniela Villegas and sported creepy accessories containing actual insects! I must admit, I’m more of a “diamond” girl, but Julianne scores major points for originality in my book!

I thoroughly enjoyed watching the red carpet with some of my favorite girl friends last night. There is nothing like gushing and raving about the best (and worst) gowns, and the most beautiful people in the world! I can’t wait for the Academy Awards!!!

For now, I will leave you with the most flattering gown of the evening – bravo Taylor Swift. Her stylist gets an A+

Where to shop: Every Occasion Boutique – Salem, MA

Good morning,

I have been excited to do this write-up for quite a while. I recently visited one of my favorite accessories and clothing stores in Salem, MA, Every Occasion Boutique, and was delighted (as always) by the colorful selection, and sweet shop owner, Michelle Kennedy. Every Occasion Boutique opened last year in the quaint shopping area of Pickering Wharf in Salem, MA, and quickly became one of my “staple stores” based on its trendy selection, variety and prices, not to mention the well-appointed store and welcoming atmosphere. Kennedy, like my mission with StyleFlattery, believes that any woman can flatter herself with the right style, fit and accessories.

Every Occasion Boutique is currently running a 30% off sale on winter clothes, scarves, gloves and hats, so I just had to indulge. I ended up with a little black dress (of course) with a cut-out-back, a red chiffon and black lace number, an ADORABLE red-bow belt, as well as a pair of champagne-stud earrings, all for under $100. I could not be happier with my purchases!

While I was at the store, I asked Michelle to tell me about upcoming trends for Spring 2013. “Pastels and floral prints are definitely in. The striped Chevron pattern from last spring, as well as maxi dresses, will be back for this spring season.” I, for one, am pumped about the Chevron pattern coming back because I LOVE STRIPES, and I can’t wait to see what is in store with feminine floral prints.

If you are looking for a cute going-out-dress, new outfit for work, or the perfect accessories for ANY event, Every Occasion Boutique, on 96 Wharf Street, Salem, MA, should be your first stop. I look forward to doing a blog when all of the new Spring 2013 items are in the store because I know there will be many flattering styles for me to share with all of you.

Remember to flatter yourself today!

I’m partial to brunettes – a pre-Golden Globes line up

Good morning my loves,

I am always so excited this time of year – fashion is in full swing with awards season! The Golden Globes are coming up on Sunday, and you bet I’m thrilled to watch the red carpet pre-show. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m a brunette, but here is a list of ladies I can’t wait to see:

  • Sophia Vergara
  • Anne Hathaway
  • Emily Blunt
  • Tina Fey
  • Julianna Marguleis

In the past, these ladies have ROCKED the red carpet wearing Vera Wang, Armani Prive, Dolce & Gabanna, Oscar de la Renta, and Naeem Khan. This got me thinking, if I were to walk the red carpet, “who” would I wear? What would the gown look like? These are some of my favorites, but this would be the one I would wear this year:
2013 01 10 Golden Globes
I am in love with this Oscar de la Renta high-low embellished gown! It has the perfect-storm of details – sequin embroidered silk-taffeta, and fitted bodice (VERY WAIST-FLATTERING). Absolutely STUNNING!

Thank goodness fashion-season has arrived! Looking forward to sharing all my comments about the red-carpet styles next week!

Closet makeover update

Hi everyone,

Last week I embarked on a closet makeover journey. For someone who has as much clothing and accessories as I do, it is IMPERATIVE for me to keep them organized. Instead, my small closet ended up looking like this:
2013 01 07 Closet update - what a mess
So, not attractive – my mother is definitely cringing right now. Thankfully, I followed my own advice, and donated a ton of my clothes, and then turned the hangers around so I can eliminate even more unworn clothes in a few months. What I didn’t expect was to get ANOTHER fantastic idea. In the picture above, you can see that my handbag obsession is a little out of hand. Instead of reorganizing them on a shelf only for them to fall over again, I decided to hang them up on a curtain rod:
2013 01 07 Closet update - purse solution
The round circles hanging from the rod (found at Home Depot in the bath section) have metal clamps on the end of them! Now all my purses are out of the way, neat AND easy to grab! I am so glad I did this project. My entire closet is refreshed, everything is organized by color (or lack-there-of: I never realized how much black I actually own). Plus, I get to donate to one of my favorite organizations, The Salvation Army.

The picture below is awful quality, but I needed to show all of you proof that I actually followed my own advice!
2013 01 07 Closet update - clean closet
My closet may be small, but that doesn’t mean I can’t flatter it! It looks fabulous!

Now, onto the next. What am I looking forward to this week? The Golden Globes of course! Who to watch? What will they wear? More on that this week!

Have a fabulous night!

A much-needed makeover

Good morning my loves,

The new year has bombarded me with messages about goals and resolutions, and how I haven’t really contemplated any! A smaller, more manageable way to look at things is to ask myself the question, “What in my life needs to be revived?” Certainly, by looking at my closet and my cosmetics, I can see a part of my life that needs a makeover. Here are 3 simple tasks I am going to do to get organized this week:

  1. Follow the 20 minute rule. While I would love to spend my entire day doing a marathon-cleaning of my closet, I just do not have that kind of time. Over the next 7 days, I will take 20 minutes per day to clear out items in my closet that I don’t use. This can be easier said than done, so let me move on to #2.

  2. Reverse all the hangers in my closet. typically do not have a problem going through my closet and choosing items which can be donated to charity. Sometimes, however, I find myself holding on to an item for YEARS because I’m going to wear it, or use it, “some day.” After making a donation pile of items I haven’t worn or used in the past 6 months, I am going to turn around all the hangers in my closet (this is a fool-proof way to see what items are actually in my wardrobe rotation, and which ones are not). After I wear the item, I will put it back on the hanger, and turn the hanger around. By the time the spring comes, I will have (I’m sure) a few items on backwards hangers which have not been worn. These items* will be donated. *If these are hard-to-part-with pieces, I am going to tap into my altruistic side and ask myself if someone else could benefit more from them – “could this suit help a woman look sharp for an interview and land a job?” This is what I like to call a “feel good moment!”

  3. Put all makeup in a clear zip-lock-bag or clear case, organize all brushes in a ceramic cup. My makeup area can get out of hand, quickly. First, I will empty all of my makeup onto a flat surface, and eliminate any items that I’ve had longer than 6 months. *Bonus, if it is MAC makeup, I can save the containers, and once I have six, I can return them to any MAC store or counter for a free lipstick! Next, all my makeup will be returned to a clear bag so I can see, and grab, my “make myself pretty paint” with ease. All brushes, lip liners and eyeliners will be put in a pretty ceramic cup, so my magic wands will be ready to go as soon as I sit down to paint my face.

I am inspired to get my “fashions” in order in an attainable way this week. Instead of making unrealistic resolutions, I think this is a much more manageable (and time-effective) way to make my life just a teansy bit more organized. I will update you on my progress, and post some before and after pictures…(gulp, now I ACTUALLY have to go do it!)

Flatter yourself today my loves!

Chiffon – an unexpected winter staple

Happy New Year everyone,

This morning, as I drive with my husband to the mountains, my brain is not on my fun-filled day of skiing ahead. Instead, I’m thinking about chiffon. Makes sense? To me, chiffon is one of the most feminine fabrics ever! I love it, and I’ve noticed that this winter, chiffon is in!

Typically saved for spring and summer, light, airy, sheer chiffon has hit the stores in the form of button-down shirts and adorable dresses. Paired with a belt (of course!) chiffon is comfortable AND sexy, it can be dressed up with the right accessories, or dressed down for a “cozy-sheik” look.

I’m absolutely in love with the use of chiffon as one of this winter’s fashion trends, and I see it carrying over into spring!

Check out my Pinterest for some gorgeous chiffon looks – http://www.pinterest.com/styleflattery/. Ok, now it’s time to focus on the slopes ahead! Don’t forget to flatter yourself today.

Xoxo,
Tara
